Ticks: the parasite of every season

ticks

While many may think that ticks are a concern exclusive to the warmer months, the truth is that these persistent parasites pose an ongoing threat, even during the winter. Although tick activity may decrease as it gets colder, there are still significant risks associated with their presence during the colder months. Let’s explore some important facts about the risks of ticks in winter.

Activity reduced but not eliminated

Although tick activity tends to decrease in the winter due to colder temperatures, they do not disappear completely. Ticks can remain active even in temperatures close to freezing, especially in protected areas such as under fallen leaves or in animal burrows.

Persistent threat to people and pets

Even during the winter, ticks can pose a health hazard to people and pets. They can transmit a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and babesiosis, among others.

Areas of variable risk

Although ticks may be less active in areas with harsher winters, regions with milder climates and milder winters may experience continued tick activity year-round. Therefore, it is important to be aware of local risks, regardless of the time of year.

Permanent prevention

Tick prevention should be an ongoing concern, even during the winter. Preventive measures, such as using tick repellents, regularly inspecting the body after outdoor activities, and treating pets with flea and tick products, are essential to minimize the risk of tick bites and associated illnesses.
