Seborrheic Dermatitis: What It Is and How to Treat It

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes inflammation, flaking, and itching. It happens when the skin produces too much sebum, the natural oil that keeps it hydrated. This imbalance can lead to dry or greasy skin, unpleasant odors, and even hair loss. Pets with dry seborrhea tend to have flaky skin, while those with oily seborrhea may show greasy patches and a stronger odor. Some animals can have both forms at the same time.

What are the symptoms?

If your pet is scratching a lot, has irritated or red skin, visible flakes, or smells stronger than usual, seborrheic dermatitis might be the cause. In more advanced cases, hair loss can also occur. These signs tend to make the animal very uncomfortable and deserve special attention.

What causes this condition?

There are several possible causes for seborrheic dermatitis. Some breeds, such as Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds, are genetically more prone to developing the issue. Other factors include allergies, hormonal imbalances like hypothyroidism, infections, or inappropriate grooming habits. Even the use of unsuitable shampoos can trigger or worsen the condition.

How is the treatment done?

Treatment usually starts with medicated shampoos that help control oiliness, reduce inflammation, and combat microorganisms. The vet may also prescribe antifungal or antibacterial medications, depending on the cause of the dermatitis. In some cases, changing the animal’s diet and including supplements like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can make a difference. For best results, always follow your veterinarian’s recommendations.

Can it be prevented?

Although seborrheic dermatitis is not always preventable, good hygiene and regular vet check-ups help control it. Keeping a close eye on your pet’s skin, choosing the right grooming products, and offering a balanced diet are essential habits to avoid flare-ups or worsening of symptoms. With proper care, your pet can live comfortably and without constant itching.
