The arrival of puppies is an exciting time for anyone who has a pregnant dog or cat at home. However, it is critical to be prepared to ensure that the delivery is safe and that the mother and pups receive the necessary care. In this article, we’ll discuss what to do during childbirth and how to recognize complications in pets.
Preparation for childbirth
First of all, it is crucial to be aware of the expected date of delivery. The gestational period in dogs and cats lasts about 63 days, although it can vary slightly according to the breed and size of the animal. Write down the date of the start of the pregnancy so you have an idea of when to expect the puppies.
Preparing a safe place
Create a comfortable and safe space for the delivery. A maternity crate or a quiet spot away from distractions is ideal. Line the area with newspapers, towels or washable blankets. Make sure the mother feels comfortable in this environment.
Monitor signs of labor
Signs of labor include restlessness, vocalization, excessive licking, loss of appetite, and slightly lower body temperature. The mother’s body temperature may drop to around 98.6F within 24 hours of giving birth. Be on the lookout for these signs and be ready for the puppies to arrive.
Assistance during childbirth
Stay calm and watch the mother closely during the birth. Most dogs and cats are capable of giving birth without human assistance. However, be ready to help if needed. If a puppy is stuck in the birth canal for too long, you may need medical help!
Recognizing Complications
Not all births go smoothly, and it’s crucial to recognize signs of complications and act quickly.
Prolonged labor: If the mother does not give birth to a pup within two hours of the onset of contractions, consult a veterinarian. The delay could indicate a problem.
Problems with the placenta: Sometimes the mother may not deliver the placenta after each puppy is born. This can cause serious infections. If you notice that the placenta is not delivering or if there is an “extra” placenta after all the puppies are born, see a veterinarian.
Excessive bleeding: Excessive bleeding during childbirth is a warning sign. If you notice that the mother is bleeding heavily, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Problems with puppies: puppies that are not breathing or are in imminent danger require urgent care, so consult a veterinarian urgently for help.
Remember that each animal and each situation is unique, and it is always advisable to have the telephone number of an emergency veterinarian at hand during the gestation and delivery period.
