Animals in low temperatures: essential care

Animals in low temperatures

Winter brings with it not only longer nights and colder temperatures, but also the need to adjust the care we give our adorable pets. To ensure your pet stays warm, healthy and happy during the colder months, here are some essential tips on how to care for your four-legged companion in cold temperatures.

Extra layers

Just like us, pets can feel the cold. Breeds with short coats or older animals may be particularly sensitive. Consider investing in clothes or blankets to protect your pet from the wind and cold. Make sure the parts are dry to avoid discomfort.

Proper hydration

Winter can also bring drier air, which can affect your pet’s hydration. Make sure they have constant access to fresh water. Consider heating the water a little to make it more appealing on particularly cold days.

Short, protected walks

Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold during walks. Wear specific clothing for pets, such as coats or booties, to protect sensitive paws.

Pay attention to food

Winter can increase your pet’s caloric needs to maintain body temperature. Consult your veterinarian to adjust the diet as needed. Also, make sure your pet is eating properly and maintains a healthy weight.
