PET-CT: what is it and how the exam works

pet-ct exam

The PET-CT exam refers to a medical imaging technique that combines two different modalities: positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT).

Widely used to detect and evaluate several diseases, including cancer, cardiac and neurological diseases, the exam is performed in a machine with the combination of two imaging modalities in a single equipment.

How it works

Computed tomography (CT) is an imaging technique that uses X-rays to create detailed images of the body, when used in conjunction with PET it provides accurate anatomical images of the body.

Thus, with the combination of the two techniques, doctors are able to analyze both the metabolic activity and the anatomy of the body.

Thus, to perform the test, a small amount of a substance composed of glucose marked with fluorine-18 is injected, which is absorbed by the cells of the body and allows the visualization of the cells that are more active. Carcinogens absorb more of the substance, which makes them appear brighter on the PET-CT image.

The exam is performed on a machine similar to a scanner. Then the patient is placed on a table that moves slowly through the device and can take about an hour.

Benefits

Performing this exam can aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, helping veterinarians identify early-stage cancers, assess the effectiveness of treatments, and monitor disease progression.

It can also be used to assess heart and neurological diseases, as well as other medical conditions.
